I've been holding off of posting lately simply because I haven't felt like it; been tired and all that. As if anyone who reads this cares.Anyway, this rant is going to be about idiots in general. For example, those people around my age that think education is "uncool" and so skip school and don't read books to avoid being called a nerd. While I would like one of these kids to happen across this blog and read it, this is hoping for too much and so I'll write this to simply get it out of my head so that I don't think about it so much.
We've all met them before. Those wanna-be "gangsters", the "tough kids", and so forth. The ones who were notorious for skipping classes or otherwise disrupting the class with obnoxious slang and attempts at being "cool". For those of us who had moments in class, such as English class, where it was required to read silently, there was almost always at least one person who refused to do so, or would stick with reading brainless magazines.
I don't really understand when or how learning and reading became nerdy in the first place. Sure, there are those people who wear thick glasses and are obsessed with science fiction, but that should, by no means, render everyone who reads a "nerd".
Those who have this kind of mindset often do some sort of drug, or drink, as well. For them, it's "cool to be high/drunk". Ever stop to think exactly why it's supposedly cool?
Let's pose a hypothetical situation, where one person - let's call him Jake - is known for being the coolest kid in the school. He always parties, always gets high, and absolutely loathes having to read and will avoid doing so whenever possible. He skips classes when he can, and disturbs the class otherwise.
Another person, who we will call Melvin, is known for being the biggest nerd in the school. He has a few zits on his face, is not the best looking, and loves to read, do math, and is interested greatly in science. He tries his best to never miss school, and when he does, is diligent about catching up in his work.
Let's fast forward several years, now. While Melvin is very successful, Jake isn't so lucky. He can't get himself to get off of drugs, and as a result has bad personal hygene. He now has marks all over his face, has bad teeth, and bad breath. He knows little to nothing about life, and has never been able to hold a job and relies on his parents for money and shelter. Not so cool now, is he?
These examples are of course rather extreme, but things like this happen every day. Reading and learning is in no way "nerdy". I myself love to read and learn knew things. My goal is to learn everything that I can, read every book that I can, and become more informed on what is happening around the world. I am very happy with such an outlook on life, as opposed to, say, a pothead that is only happy when he or she is high.
Get rid of the notion that reading books and/or learning is "nerdy" or "uncool". It makes no sense, and you will feel like a complete fool as you get older and end up having no descent job and having to rely on your parents. People such as these take up precious space and money.
It is people such as these, that have for years distracted me at school from yelling and shouting, that have made me decide to take correspondence classes so that I can learn on my own and in peace. Other factors were extreme sensitivity to noise and social anxiety that has been getting worse with each day at school, but is getting better now.
My main point here, though, is that if you're a dead weight to you and everybody else (and a huge congratulations for reading even some of this), to clean up your act unless you want to be a nuisance for the rest of your life. Learning and reading is fun, especially when you choose a subject that interests you. 0 Comments - Post/view comments
