I've been browsing through some forums, and the topic of "Is shooting animals just for fun immoral?" showed up. So, of course, I am going to give my own opinion on this matter, and more, here.

I've seen documentaries on wild animals and poachers, but the part that really gets to me is this: Some poachers capture their "prey" in cages, let them go and run a few steps, and then shoot. They don't use the meat, or any part of the animal for any useful purpose besides gaining money, and even then they'll sometimes just kill them for the hell of it. I'm not sure how often this goes on today, or if it even goes on at all.. but if it does, and these people find joy in just killing the animal for fun and not food, then who is to say that this person won't find joy in killing a human?

I am not against people who go out and hunt for their food. Some may say that it is unnecessary these days, but some people would rather go out and kill their own animal instead of having someone else doing it for them. Not to mention that animals in the wild, such as deer, are probably a whole lot more healthy than livestock raised in slaughter houses, where disease and filth abound. Most people who buy meat at the store don't give a shit about what died, how it died, and what conditions it died in. To me, this is disgusting. That animal was cramped into a cage/stall, perhaps starved so much that cannibalism was the only option, and then slaughtered, in order for you to be able to eat what's in front of you, and most just don't care or even think about it.

I'll be honest and say that I do eat purchased meat. I wouldn't have the heart to go out and shoot an animal myself, not to mention that I'm not old enough to own a gun. But I realise that the meat in front of me came from an actual, breathing animal, that gave its life in order for me to survive (not like it really had a choice anyway). Sure, meat isn't absolutely essential for human survival, but I find it to be redundant to stop eating meat for the purpose of saving a cow or two. If that meat doesn't go to me, it will go to someone else. Besides, not all slaughter houses are necessarily inhumane.
